Bus Be Kool!
But... the problem is many people don't have 40 feet of curb space and those streets you live on are too darn narrow to wrangle a long wheelbase 40 footer down anyway!

The inspection and delivery run was not without a few glitches.
On the afternoon of Friday, January 25, 2002 the seller picked us up at the curb at the Oakland airport at 2:30 as planned. We walked the rig inside and out, for about an hour and a half, one of us with the seller, the other alone, then we got together alone and we agreed.... We were Not Happy; we were thrilled!!! The condition, layout, quality, etc. was much more than either of had hoped for!

We went for a short test ride (seller driving) and all was still very cool. We parked at the curb, traded money and paper, said bye-bye.

Heavy rain was due any minute, we decided to make a supermarket run and then hit the road so we could get over into the valley and onto I-5 for the night. Richmond at dusk on a Friday night.... the Homeies had big eyes for us, lots of cat calls, that really woke Sandi up to the truth of my old war stories.

We climbed over the Altamont pass and headed down the valley looking for a truck stop. I complained about the road speed governor that was toping us out at 54 MPH, and was planning on how to reset it for at least 65 or so. We found a truck stop in Santa Nella, tanked up, and promptly crashed out in the back lot.

The next morning, I discovered how to fix the governor, right from the driver's seat..... when I put it in Drive, I just push the leaver a little bit past the indent towards Neutral, and then it will SHIFT OUT OF THIRD and she will do 75 real easy with in not to the metal! DUH!!! (no tach).  There is no Road Speed governor, just an RPM governor!  I was running her up to max RPM and she would just sit there!
That old Detroit 8V71 never complained a bit, it just topped out at 2200 RPM and held it's ground, it did not even blow out any oil or heat up.

The trip down the valley was easy, we pulled the Grapevine at 45 blasting past almost every truck, several buses, and many cars. She had only heated up to 165-170 at 75 mph in the valley, and she never even hit 180 going up the Grape Vine. Full down on the peddle and climbing hard she made just a taste of black smoke, but not near enough to raise an eyebrow of any CHP.

This is Sandi kicking back on the way down I-5 on Saturday the 26th., on our way to San Diego--

We tanked up again in San Juan Capistrano just to see what the MPG is (no fuel gauge) and on that run she had made 6.7..... 165 gallons of fuel, 1100 miles.... 800 and I would be comfortable with lots of time to shop for maneuvering room and price. By the way, the San Juan Capistrano stop was at a regular gas station, no big deal but a truck stop would be much better!

Saturday night we parked on the curb at the Chula Vista Marina, Sunday morning we pulled into the KOA Camp. Sandi spent the day with me transferring my crap from the Motor Home and doing the Martha Stewart thing........... what a doll she is!
